The question that never closes

There is a question I get more than any other, and it has been answered thousands of times by people who took it seriously. Which certification should I get.

Go and look. The answers are careful, current, free, and often excellent. And the question keeps coming back, week after week, from people who have already read them.

That is the part worth stopping on. A question that gets answered well and keeps getting asked was never really the question.

Two questions wearing one coat

Underneath it there are two, and they look alike from the inside.

The first has a shape you can hold. A list. An exam. A date, a fee, a pass mark. You can research it this afternoon, decide it, finish it, and have something to show.

The second has none of that. What should I be able to do? Nothing to enrol in, no date, and nobody obvious to ask, because the people who could answer are already inside the jobs you are aiming at.

Both are questions about your career. Only one is answerable today. So that is the one everybody asks, and the internet answers it sincerely and well, and the asking never stops.

Why this is not a mistake anyone made

Nobody asks the question that is actually bothering them. They ask whichever nearby question has somebody able to answer it. That is not avoidance, it is what sensible people do when the real thing has no edges to grip.

Which means the useful thing is not another good answer. It is giving the real question a shape, so it can be asked at all.

One sentence

Name the smallest thing you could own.

Not a title, a job. The difference is whether one person could be handed it on a Monday and be expected to have it by Friday. Backups on a single system qualifies. So does whoever the team calls when one particular thing falls over. "Cloud engineer" does not, because nobody hands anybody that. Keep it small deliberately: somewhere near you, a job that size is being done badly, and the person doing it would be glad of the help.

Then work backwards. If a team handed that to you tomorrow, what would they expect you to do without supervision? Write those down. Beside each one, mark whether you have actually done it.

That list is your real curriculum. Held against it, the certification question mostly answers itself, and it takes about ten minutes.

A certification tells somebody what you studied. It does not, by itself, tell them what you can be trusted to own. That is not a shortcut around studying. It is what the studying was for.

If you want the page

I made a one-pager for the working-backwards part, because that is where it gets difficult and where a blank sheet helps. It has room for the thing you could own, what its owner is expected to do, and an honest column for what you have not done yet, because "not yet" is a legal answer on it and usually the most useful one

Give it a proper sitting. The second step is where all the work is.

Thank you for reading this one. Stay blessed.
