Horizontal vs vertical scaling, what's the difference?

Horizontal scaling, often called scaling out, means adding more machines to your pool of resources, like adding lanes to a highway to handle more traffic. Vertical scaling, or scaling up, means increasing the capacity of an existing machine, more CPU, memory, or storage, like upgrading a car's engine for speed. Each strategy has its own advantages and trade-offs.
